The moment and time where people can show up as themselves, share their truth, and express who they are in their own unique wayāspoken word. The event that gives people permission to bring their talents and passion out and share them unapologetically on stage. On November 21, the Impact and Elite organization hosted Poetry Jam at Connertonās. It was a beautiful event with an open stage and mic where all students, faculty, and staff were welcome. It was presented by the Multicultural and International Students Program and the English Department.
There was a live music band, good vibes and food, and faculty and students came out to sing their poems and songs and play their instruments. The night was lively enough that it even inspired a nicknameāāKingās, we are a vibeāābecause of how lit the energy was. Individuals played instruments, sang songs, recited Shakespeare, and performed both existing poems and their own original work. The event closed with a jam called āLove, Hope,ā featuring music and the audience singing along with poetry singer Rose Daniels, who hosted and presented the evening.
Special thanks to the Rite to Remain Music band for bringing the beats.
“Untitled.”
My mama told me donāt take the bait.
I tried to ask her please mama elaborate.
She said son you are in a new place.
You gotten make sure your mind in the right state.
College is a new beginning.
I gotta keep up my grades to keep winning.
Gotta deal with the cards Iāve been dealt.
Before Uncle Sam gives me that belt.
Iām a young black child in the USA.
Plenty of people that wanna send me away.
Povertyās enemy is education.
I need to make sure I’m not the last generation.
I gotta stir up the pot,
I gotta use what I’m taught,
Work hard before I vacation.
Keep writing till I get this degree.
Iām the eldest so they all look up to me.
Gotta follow the path that I’m fated.
So I can tell everybody that I made it.
“GOD”
When I wake up, I pray
I like the world his way
He has changed my life each and every day
When my life feels grey
He takes my sadness to away
God I need you is all I have to say
For my sins he payed
Made me the woman I am today
