Delegates Represent Syria at Model UN Conference

Twelve King’s College student-delegates participated in the National Model United Nations simulation in New York City from April 6 to 10. Representing the Syrian Arab Republic—a young government rebuilding from a decade-long civil war, they worked with students from colleges and universities across the US and around the world.  (Yes, there were delegates from Japan, Australia, Italy, Germany, and Canada!) Delegates debated and collaborated on resolutions about nuclear weapons, the role of women in post-conflict situations, climate change, and protecting the global food supply, among other topics. Student participants—shown here in the United Nations General Assembly Hall—included (first row, left to right) Carla Hidalgo, Sophia Hahn, Isabella Bagnuolo, Yosaira Perez Garcia, Hibba Mehran, Mahogany Robinson; (second row, left to right) Robert Davidson (head delegate), Preston Klem, Shane Cegelka, Thomas Bonavita, Benjamin Williams, and Mustafa Thompson (head delegate). Dr. Beth Admiraal prepared the students for the conference during sessions of PS 374—Politics of the United Nations, which is open to students of all majors each spring semester.  She and Dr. Margarita Rose shared faculty advisor duties during the conference.
